Front page of 'The Portfolio', Feb 18th, 1826: "St Albans High Street." Anonymous aquatint and typeset. The image is actually of the High Street as it was up to c. 1812, when the Market Cross was removed. Although crudely drawn, this is an unusual view along the High Street from the West. The roadway is shown heavily rutted where carts and wagons wound around the Market Cross in the middle of the road - as they must have had to with the Eleanor Cross before. And the Clock Tower may be buttressed behind the shop built against it.
