Samuel Ryder (1858 – 1936) moved to St Albans in 1895 and founded a horticultural business, which made him a large fortune. He was one of the first people to sell penny packets of seeds. His business began in a disused chapel in Dagnall Street, but moved to Holywell Hill in 1911. The Seed Exhibition Hall, now a café, was built next to the offices in 1931.Having taken up golf for the good of his health, he became very keen and founded the international Ryder Cup competition.
