Set of Roman Samian ware cups. From Turnershall Farm excavations, near Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire. Samian cups could have been used as drinking vessels or as serving bowls for Roman food. Samain was produced on an enormous scale in factories in Gaul, with the products being traded around the Roman world, especially northern Europe
