Roman oyster shells and spoon in a black ceramic burnished ware bowl. Seafood and particularly oysters were an important part of the Roman diet and oyster shells are a common find at Verulamium. The quantity found suggest that there must have been a thriving trade in oysters along the routes from Verulamium to the coast.
