Watercolour by J.H.Buckingham showing the funeral of Lady Verulam in progress in the graveyard of St Michael's Church, St Albans. Crowds of mourners stand around the open grave, with the coffin partly visible on the left, prior to burial. No date, but initials J.H.B. visible in the bottom right hand corner. Given the period during which Buckingham was working, this may be the funeral of The Rt. Hon. Charlotte, Countess of Verulam (1783 - 1863). Born Lady Charlotte Jenkinson, she was the wife of James Walter Grimston, the 1st Earl of Verulam and mother of eight children including James Walter Grimston, 2nd Earl of Verulam.
