Sopwell Mill, Cottonmill Lane, St Albans. This mill was run by the Butterfield family from 1844 - 1931. George Butterfield ran the mill from 1844, when it was part of the Gorhambury estate. His brother Edward farmed at Sopwell Farm. When George Butterfield was unable to work following an accident around 1907, his eldest son George took over the running of the mill. He was forced to see the Mill in 1931 due to financial problems and the decline of the flour milling industry. Butterfield Lane off Cottonmill Lane is named after the family. Kindly loaned to St Albans Museums for reproduction and inclusion in this image database from the family collection of Mrs M. Wickens.
