Watercolour by J.H. Buckingham, 232 x 280 mm. The scene as a labourer returns home in Smallford at the end of the working day, to be greeted by his wife and children. The little weatherboard house on the right is an example of a medieval hall house. This was an early type of dwelling built in the tradition of barns, of weatherboarded timber buildings build on brick foundations. It has early casement windows, probably of the 17th century, and plank shutters. There is an external brick chimney, added onto the end of the house and the roof is thatched.
