Alexander Osborn and son John at Verulamium Lake
PX5107
[not our collections]
  • Photographs
Photograph of Alexander Charles Osborn with his son John Charles Osborn (born St Albans, 1931) at the lake at Verulamium Park, around 1932. Alexander Charles Osborn was the grandson of Thomas Hiskin Charles Osborn, several of whose watercolour paintings are held by the museum. Verulamium Park is so-called because it occupies part of the site of the Roman city of Verulamium. The land was bought in 1929 by the city council from the Earl of Verulam: it had formerly been St Germain's farm, part of the Verulam estate. The digging of the ornamental lake provided work for many unemployed men during the depression, thanks to government grants to fund its construction.
Loaned for reproduction (originals not accessioned) by L Reynolds 03/08/2004.
