The Kingsbury Jug. Colourless blown glass rim flared fire rounded and thickened; applied base ring cut from another cylinder with central pontil mark; neck decorated with applied spiral; self-coloured trail chain handle. A fine glass jug was found inside a stone coffin at Kingsbury just outside the Roman walls in 1813. The jug and coffin are the earliest collected items in the Museum. Some glass blowing sites are known in Britain, where broken fragments could be melted down and reused, but many objects were probably imported from the continent. It was usually used to make cups and jugs, but not window glass, as it was difficult to make large pieces of flat glass.
