"Ancient Lectern of Brass. Formerly in the Abbey-Church, Holyrood, now in the Parish Church of St Stephens, St Albans, Hertfordshire." Drawn and lithographed by W. Galloway, published in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Vol. XIII, Plate III. No date. This bronze eagle lectern previously belonged to the Bishop of Dunkeld and was plundered from Holyrood Abbey by Sir Richard Lee during an attack on Edinburgh in 1544. It was buried for saftely in St Stephen's churchyard, was then rediscovered in the 18th century and returned to the church. Its theft in 1985 was blamed on Scottish nationalists.
