View looking up Victoria Street from the junction with Upper Lattimore Rd, 1959. A group of women are seen walking along the pavement in the left foreground. Victoria Street was the Victorian showpiece road of the city, linking the old city centre with the vital railway station. Here it is caught on a quiet sunny 1950s afternoon. The styles of the women in the foreground suggest they may be part of the Italian community, which added much to the life of St Albans from the post-war period. This photograph is from the St Albans Council Street Survey carried out in the 1959.
