Watercolour painting of a stone carving depicting the martyrdom of Amphibalus. According to the hand-written note underneath this is "In the Crown Inn St Albans". According to Geoffrey of Monmouth, Amphibalus was an underground Christian priest sheltered by St. Alban at his house in Verulamium. Alban took the place of Amphibalus when the authorities came to arrest him, and was subsequently executed. Amphibalus is supposed to have converted numerous Roman Britons after his brush with death and fled with them to Wales. He was later caought and returned to Verulamium where he too was martyred. Amphibalus' body was supposedly discovered at Redbourn in 1178 and translated to a shrine in St Albans Abbey.
