Watercolour by J.H.Buckingham showing "St Albans: From Lattimore Road, looking towards the Midland Railway Station [on London Road] - Oswald Road across the top of the fields, and Victoria Street where the hedge runs on the left - about 1850." Victoria Street was originally called Shropshire Lane, then Sweetbriar Lane: before the arrival of the railway in 1868, this whole area was fields but it quickly grew up in the latter half of the century.
