Watercolour painting by Sir George Clausen. A full scale oil version of 'Stone Pickers' hangs in the Laing Art Galery, Newcastle. Anglo- Dutch artist moved from London to a house at Childwick Green, between St Albans and Harpenden. Stone picking was one of the possible jobs for a Victorian farm worker. Stones had to be picked from the fields before the land was ploughed as they dulled the cutting edge of a plough. They were placed in a bucket at the side of the road and used for road repairs.
