Plate 6 of 100 from part 1 (number 9) of Holmes Winters' series of etchings "The Last of Old St Albans". "The old Police Station alley, St Albans. Sketch Mar 18th 1889." This alleyway, which runs between Chequer Street and Market Place, is also known as Sovereign Way. Note caption is dated 1889 but date in bottom right hand corner of image has date [18]97. Drawn and etched by Holmes-Winter. St Albans council built a new single-storey police station in Sovereign Alley, behind the Town Hall, in 1860. There had been a town police force since 1836 and the St Albans police force maintained their independence from the Hertfordshire Constabulary until 1947.
NB: These are largely scanned from Box 17, but given accession nos from complete collection in box 61 since these are the only complete accessioned set, in order to export to Vernon. Images will be identical but not all edition numbers will be right.
