McMullen & Son's coach works and showroom, North Crescent, Hertford (1898). Wood engraving by J S Cooper from a photograph; article in the Pictorial Record The engraving and accompanying article illustrate the great development and improvement of horse-drawn carriages during Queen Victoria's reign. But who, looking in McMullen's window, could have guessed that in twenty years the coach building trade would be a thing of the past, killed by the internal combustion engine and the First World War? However the showrooms lived on, simply by selling cars instead of carriages. Today they are the Hertford premises of Waters Ltd the Peugeot dealers in North Road.
