Steel etching from a drawing by C.Marshall, engraved by J Henshall [c 1835] 116 × 145. View looking down St Peter's Street, St Albans towards the Old Town Hall, The Gables, Market Place and the Clock Tower with St Albans Abbey Tower in the background. Cattle market appears to be in progress. The best early view of the Town Hall, with a crowd before it, perhaps at election time. The street muddy and detail of drain in foreground; boy with hoop. The Clock Tower and Abbey behind in greatly foreshortened perspective. The Clock Tower, unrestored, has the semaphore hut and a flagpole. The old town hall was opened in 1831, designed in a neo-classical style by architect George Smith.
Duplicate of PH8701; PX3623 / 82.2283; PX3990 / 1994.275. Note similarity to PX 3622, though foreground figures are different.
