Alma Road Girls School, 1913. Alma Road School, on the corner of Bedford Road, was for girls and infants during 1913. It appears the girls have been studying wildlife and their work is decorating one of the classroom walls. The other wall stores numerous dumbbells for use in PT classes. The Alma Road girls and infants school was built in 1882, and enlarged 1890. The board schools in St Albans were all built around the end of the nineteenth century following two acts of parliament in 1870 and 1876 which established the prinicples of universal compulsory education for all children until the age of 12. They also included Bernard's Heath School, Hatfield Road School, Camp School and Garden Fields School on Catherine Street (now the Jubilee Centre).
