People walking on path between the bank of the River Ver and Verulamium Lake in Verulamium Park. Verulamium Park is so-called because it occupies part of the site of the Roman city of Verulamium. The land was bought in 1929 by the city council from the Earl of Verulam: it had formerly been St Germain's farm, part of the Verulam estate. The digging of the ornamental lake provided work for many unemployed men during the depression, thanks to government grants to fund its construction.
