Autumn Trees, Verulamium Park

Trees with autumn colours on the River Ver at Verulamium Park viewed from the grounds of St Albans School. Verulamium Park is so-called because it occupies part of the site of the Roman city of Verulamium. The land was bought in 1929 by the city council from the Earl of Verulam: it had formerly been St Germain's farm, part of the Verulam estate. The digging of the ornamental lake provided work for many unemployed men during the depression, thanks to government grants to fund its construction.
