Copped-Hall, Totteridge (c 1725) Etching, source unknown. This scene, which looks south, is now 1½ miles east of Scratchwood Services on the M1, and no longer in Hertfordshire. But around 1725 Totteridge, Herts, was in commuting range, and we see Joseph da Costa, probably a Portugese Jewish merchant, arriving home from the office in his coach and six. Everything looks new here: common fields have been enclosed, and high fences placed around da Costa's formal garden and deer park. Even the brick pits at the side of the road have not yet become overgrown. There is a point of interest on the horizon (marked 'D'): on a clear day one could see across London to Banstead, 25 miles away on the Surrey Hills.
