Cross Oak, near Berkhamsted (c 1880). Two-colour lithograph for the estate agents. Throughout Victoria's reign Hertfordshire continued to provide residences for the well-to-do businessman, who could commute to the City by several train routes. Cross Oak was a new house, built c 1875. Amongst the attractions identified by the estate agent is room to play the new game of lawn tennis, invented in the late 1870s.
