A Chinese Delegation at Hatfield House: "Li Hung Chang at Hatfield: Lady Salisbury Conducting Her Guest Through The 'Lime Arcade' ". Photo etching, perhaps from Illustrated London News (1896). Li Hung Chang (1823-1901), Chinese general heaped with honours and created viceroy following his defeat of the Tai Ping Rebellion. He took charge of the foreign policy of China from the 1870s to his death. In 1896 he undertook a European tour, receiving, as can be seen, the attention due to a virtual head of state during his stay at Hatfield House, home of the Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury.
