Soveriegn Way (alley between Chequer Street and Market Place) looking towards Market Place. In older images, this alleyway is referred to as the old Police Station alley. St Albans council built a new single-storey police station in Sovereign Way, behind the Town Hall, in 1860. There had been a town police force since 1836 and the St Albans police force maintained their independence from the Hertfordshire Constabulary until 1947.
See Holmes Winter etching of the same view in 1897 - 2002.5023.7.
