Medieval pottery cooking pot (pipkin). Pipkins were cooking pots with handles and, often, 3 small feet, intended for standing in the hot coals at the edge of the fire. This one has lost its base, so it is impossible to tell if it had feet. The rim is slightly hollowed to hold a lid and there is a spout. It has heavy limescale inside. This type of unglazed coarse pottery was made at kiln sites all over South Hertfordshire and Middlesex in the 12th/13th century.
