Cistercian-type ware was so-called because it was first identified at the sites of Cistercian monasteries, although it is not found only on such sites. Small quantities have been excavated in St Albans. Drinking cups are very common, but small jugs, costrels (bottles) and chafing dishes are also found. The hard red fabric has a treacle-brown glaze inside and out, and may be decorated with strips and pads of light coloured clay. The cup on the left is a small squat form, those next to it are the lower halves of taller forms.
