This is made of Cistercian-type ware. Cistercian-type ware was so called because it was first identified at the sites of Cistercian monasteries. It was later recognised at many types of site throughout Yorkshire and the Midlands. The candles might have been made of beeswax, which was expensive, or of tallow (mutton fat), which was cheap but gave a dimmer light and a strong smell.
