A sympathy card sent by the Secretary of State for War on behalf of King George V and the Queen to the family of Private. William John Fairy, a soldier from St Albans killed in the First World War after being fatally injured at Ypres in September 1917.. The card bears the royal coat of arms and reads: "The King commands me to assure you of the true sympathy of His Majesty and The Queen in your sorrow."
