Replica of a Victorian sampler with a wooden embroidery hoop from the St Albans Museums teaching collection. A sampler is a piece of embroidery produced as a demonstration or test of skill in needlework. They often included the alphabet, figures, motifs, decorative borders and sometimes the name of the person who embroidered it and the date. Rich girls would have embroidered as a pastime in Victorian times, and in earlier periods as well. Embroidering samplers was considered a sign of virtue, achievement and industry, and girls were taught it from a young age.
