Sampler in various stitches in cotton thread on linen. Stitched by Rebecca Scott, Dunstable, 1819. Text reads: "Remember thy CREATOR in the days of thy Youth - In the gay season of thy YOUTH. / In nature's smiling bloom . Ere age arrive and trembling wait / Its summons in the tomb. / Remember they CREATOR, GOD, / For HIM thy powers employ; / Make HIM thy fear, thy love, thy hope, / Thy confidence, thy joy. / HE shall defend and guide thy course, / Through life's tempestuous sea. / Till thou art landed on the shore / Of bless'd ETERNITY. / Then seek the LORD betimes and choose / The path of heavenly truth, / The earth affords no lovelier sight / Than a religious YOUTH. Teach me to quit this transitory Scene / With decent triumph, and a look serene; / Teach me to fix my ardent hopes of high; / And having lived to GOD, to Him to die."
