Marlborough Almshouses, Hatfield Road. The Marlborough Almshouses were opened in 1736 near the top of what is now known as Hatfield Road to provide accommodation for 18 men and 18 women. Their construction was funded by Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough (1660- 1744), widow of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough. She was born Sarah Jennings at Water End House in Sandridge. The Churchills' residences included Holywell House, which once stood at the bottom of Holywell Hill.
