Watercolour painting of the view looking up Holywell Hill from around the bridge over the River Ver towards the town centre, The Duke of Marlborough pub and St Albans Abbey on the hill. Pedestrians walk in the street, a carriage and horses travels down the hill and a figure on a horse approaches a water trough outside the pub. Note open field on the right hand side and what appears to be an oast house in the distance on the far left. By its location this appears to be from the brewery which stood behind Sopwell Lane until the twentieth century. No artist's signature but a note in the bottom left corner reads "St Albans, Herts, 1826".
