Watercolour by G. Shepherd, dated 1809. Untitled scene showing a view looking up Fishpool Street, St Albans, from the junction with Branch Road. A coach painted "St Albans to London" is driving towards town while a horse and cart is being led by a man in the opposite direction. St Albans Abbey tower can be seen in the distance. The sign on the building on the far left reads "John Ewington", the name of the landlord of the Black Lion Public House . The building on the opposite side of the road with the ornate door lintel is now The Blue Anchor pub. The cottages on the far right, next door to the Blue Anchor pub, were demolished in 1935. Fishpool Street was one of the main routes into St Albans at this time.
Compare with pen and wash 1981.3928 - not signed but appears to be preliminary/alternative version of this painting.
