Replica Tudor inkwell, copy of Cistercian ware, from the St Albans Museums teaching collection. This type of pottery is called Cistercian ware as it was first excavated in the grounds of a Cistercian monastery. Only the rich knew how to read and write. Boys went to school and girls were educated at home. Therefore only the rich would have needed an ink pot to dip their goose quill into. Quills had to be sharpened everyday with special knives which we still call pen knives.
