Medieval copper alloy pins. These pins are made of drawn copper wire. Married women in medieval times had to cover their heads. They wore head-dresses which ranged from simple kerchiefs knotted around their heads to very complicated confections of cloth, wire and veiling. Large quantities of pins were used to keep these in place. For example, the trousseau of Princess Joan, daughter of Edward III, in 1348 included 12,000 pins for her veils.
